Gretchen Klein, the leader of the program, engineered the fatal crash and planned their stranding. The girls on the deserted island slowly get to know each other and work to survive as castaways, oblivious to the experiment.

Throughout the series, the viewers get to see flashbacks into the separate lives of the girls before the plane crash and, flash-forwards into the scene of a staged interview by men claiming to be FBI agents, after their supposed escape from the deserted island.
